Shares of Sina Corporation (NASDAQ: SINA) soared to a new 52-week high Monday following news that the Chinese media giant’s deal to purchase assets of Focus Media Holding Limited (NASDAQ: FMCN) likely had fallen through. Rumors had swirled for weeks suggesting that the deal might not be completed.
Sina was set to acquire a portion of Focus Media’s business that places advertising in malls, airports, office buildings and other places for $1.66 billion. The agreement is set to expire Wednesday, Sept. 30, without approval from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. The government reportedly didn’t respond to repeated requests for approval. Both companies stated Monday in a joint statement that they wouldn’t extend a deadline for closing the transaction.

California start-up Fisker Automotive has received a $529 million loan from the U.S. to try to build a hybrid sports car in Finland.
$529 million of your money. To build a sports car. In Finland.
News of the Fisker loan comes amid questions about the controversial $465 million taxpayer loan to Tesla at a time when the Silicon Valley-based electric car start-up has already raised over $200 million in private venture capital from prestigious VC’s like Draper Fisher Jurvetson, cash-rich companies like Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), and the likes of JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM).
“This isn’t for average Americans,” Leslie Paige, a spokeswoman for Citizens Against Government Waste, told The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) last week. “This is for people to put something in their driveway that is a conversation piece. It’s status-symbol thing.”
Of course, there’s no evidence of corruption or self-dealing in this matter. By all accounts, the money was doled out fairly. And in Fisker’s defense, it says that most of the money will be used to finance the production of a $40,000 sedan that hasn’t been designed yet.
But still — huh? Why did we just give a start-up $529 million to build something that they haven’t designed yet? Can I’ve $529 million for the AIDS cure I haven’t discovered yet?
It’s all very confusing. Still, Fisker did announce last week that it expects to report a profit in 2011, when it estimates it will sell 15,000 units of its Karma vehicle — a luxury sedan that will cost $87,900.
Of course, to butcher a line from the Roman poet Catullus, the forward-looking predictions of profitability from CEOs of starts-ups should be written in the wind and running water.

September is drawing to a close. What does this signify? Well, one of my favorite times of the year, Halloween, will soon be upon us. Even more than that, holiday shopping is about to begin in earnest. Is your portfolio ready?
I’ve been checking around for investments in the retail sector. Problem is, so many of them have already had significant run-ups. However, even with these higher stock prices, the sector still might be an interesting one to look at since it’s possible that Christmas could turn out okay. A post on DailyFinance discusses a report from the International Council of Shopping Centers, which basically states that numbers from this holiday season should see an improvement over last year’s data.

Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) will be spending $100 million to market its new … nothing. The internet pioneer who wants out of the tech biz and solely into the media biz (sounds like the Terry Semel days) will spend that sum over the next 15 months to gain new customers to its plethora of web properties and keep them there as long as possible (and charger advertisers appropriately).
What is new about this? From initial review, nothing. Yahoo! has always wanted to gain customers to its extensive world wide web collection and keep them there. What’s so compelling a change that it’s worth $100 million? So far, nothing this writer can determine. Just using Microsoft Corp.’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Bing search services across all its properties is surely not a compelling reason.
