Here’s some good news. Home prices unexpectedly rose in May according to the Case Shiller index that measures changes in home prices.

Some 13 of 20 metropolitan areas saw the biggest monthly gains. The four highest were Cleveland, San Francisco, Dallas, and Chicago.

Concerning the change in dynamics, David Blitzer, chairman of the committee at Standard & Poor’s, which publishes the Case Shiller index, said: “This could be an indication that home price declines are finally stabilizing.”

THQ (NASDAQ: THQI), a video-game software publisher that competes with Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS), Take-Two Interactive (NASDAQ: TTWO), and my personal favorite, Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI), lost well over 6% of its market value during Tuesday’s after-hours trading session. The culprit catalyst? First-quarter earnings.

I was a bit surprised by the sell-off at first. After all, sales increased over 77%, and earnings per share on an adjusted basis came in at 10 cents versus a loss of 38 cents one year ago. One would think that Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) would be friends. Google CEO Eric Schmidt sits on Apple’s board and his company partners heavily with Apple’s iPhone for Google’s web products. That’s, except when Google is trying to do an end-run around Apple partner AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T).

After all, AT&T surely does not want customers bypassing its margin-heavy text messaging plans to use a free Google-provided solution.
